The great crested grebe (Podiceps cristatus)

Measuring 46 – 51 cm in length, the great crested grebe is not exactly small. It broods on floating nests, and feeds of fish. This bird, which belongs to the grebe family, can be found at lakes and streams. They like to spend the winter in Western Europe and the Mediterranean, where the winters are warmer than ours here.
The number of breeding pairs in Vorarlberg is estimated at around 200, though the number of guests uctuates between 600 and 1,800 individual birds over the winter months.
